I saw this term for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I love it! I can't remember who said it or I would give them "credit". I do know I'm stealing and using it from now on. :) I don't think it's a "thing" yet...a google search get's a lot of hits, none of them to do with painting. Well, except for the "right brain" term.
Brain Air means doing a painting straight from your memory. It's mostly what I'm doing now, and I am LOVING it. After many, many years of realistic paintings of still lifes there is something really freeing and rewarding about brain air painting.
The memories come from long ago paintings, current paintings, looking at thousands of photographs of landscapes. Going outside, or travelling...capturing the beautiful outdoors of this gorgeous country of ours. From the oceans of Vancouver Island to the prairies of Alberta, and the mountains in between there is a virtual cornucopia of visual treats.
Occasionally I will glance at a reference photo for colour or a certain placement of a cloud, or a rock, or a tree, etc; but 99% of what is coming off of my brushes is memory fuelled. So. Much. Fun!!! I hope you are all enjoying them as much as I am!!
